SUMMARY:Tuesday Work Party
DESCRIPTION:The best reason for getting through Monday … again© \nHey Everybody\, two things: there’s so much going on I had to make up and index and there aren’t any pictures. \n1. Composting \nLoads and loads of leaves to un-bag and mulch \nSearch for the elusive “Green Material” \nSee Kelly’s email below for more detail \n2. Greenhouses \nFinalize bed prep West Green House and plant tomatoes \nIf not to disruptive\, finalize bed prep East Green House \n3. Turning Beds in Communal Garden \nThe Potato Patch Kids are going to turn over 165′ of beds 30″ wide 18″ wide to house this year’s potatoes. If you’re pretty sure which end of a spade fork to use … or if you even know what a spade fork is… you’re more than welcome to lend a hand. \n4. Planting in Communal Garden \nSpeaking of hands… if yours are steady then planting what comes to them may be the best way to spend awhile Tuesday evening. \n5. Weed Whacking \nOh yes\, there will be Weed Whacking for the masses! \nThe masses who know what they’re doing that is. \nEven though we won’t be seeing or doing any Tuesday evening I just wanted to give you keeners a heads up. \nSee Mr. Dave E’s email below for more detail … for those of you to whom EARLY is a dubious proposition at the best of times… once the Garden gets its protective gear on site we will be organizing whatever it takes to get more Whackers at it! \nStay tuned or drop a line to info@inglewood etc to be kept current \n\nComposting Email\nKelly sent out the following email to the Compost Crew thought that it would be of interest to those of you considering a career in the field. =:) \nComposting this week Tuesday …. \nThere is a large pile of leaves in the cornucopia garden that need to be run over with the mower and moved into the storage bins along the east fence. This will be a 2 person job. If a couple people are there early\, say 6 PM\, and a couple show up later\, 7PM\, then swap out. There is a mountain of leaves to break down so more than enough fun for everyone. \nWe need green material to start new compost bins. The grass in the green space next the community center could be mowed using the mower with the bag attachment. This could be done anytime you are at the garden and the grass looks tall enough to make it worth the effort. \nDump the full bag into a wheel barrow and then move the cut grass to the area near the compost bins. The grass was long enough to mow this afternoon when I stopped at the garden but the city may be mowing it tomorrow. The city mower misses spots around the trees and such so there are some areas that can be cut even if the city has cut the larger space. One or two people could take this on Tuesday. \nIf the city cuts the grass before we get a chance\, perhaps we could plan to meet on Saturday AM this week if the weather co-operates. \nI moved the compost thermometer to the bin that was started last week. The temperature was up to 135F today and the bin is about 1/3 down compared to last week. \nKelly \n\nWeed Whacking Email\nMr. Dave E\, Chief Weed Whacker\, sent me the following email regarding the Weed Whackers ~ its FYI for any of you thinking of trying to take on the Dandelions by yourself. \nThanks for your timely email\, Shawn. \nThis is a good time of the season to get interest in weed whacking. \nYour two points are givens* and I would add the following: \n\nDebris and gardening stuff must be removed from the rows following gardening….or don’t expect you’ll get your weeds whacked!!  Your garden neighbours might be upset with you!\n\nSuiting up is an art……it is a good idea to wear old pants because they become stained green with the fly….wellingtons are good footwear as are gloves and glasses.   It would be nice to have the Garden put up a set of overalls\, a large pair of wellys and some goggles.   Gloves and hats should be personal\, in my opinion.  I would recommend ear plugs or cotton batting.\n\nThe southern and western exposures of beds are home to the fastest growth and whacking should focus here.\nDon’t forget the common areas\, the entrances\, particularly the front\, outside the front and around the back gate as well.\n\nI was at the Garden very early Saturday morning for about an hour (tank of gas duration) and I got about 40% of the area whacked….more is needed. \nI’m planning to be on site again EARLY Wednesday morning and would gladly show volunteers what needs to be done and how best to do it. \nI bring my own machine to the Garden and  I assume that the Garden whacker is in “Kurt’s shed” and there is gas mix.   We have a large roll of Fire Wire to replenish the whacking string. \n*My two points were: \n\nhave plot renters take a more active role in knocking down dandelions on the ground at or near their plots\nget more folks interested in Weed Whacking generally\n\n\n  \n0603:0254

SUMMARY:Saturday Work Party
DESCRIPTION:The iconic late morning – early afternoon Saturday Task Festival™ continues… \n\nPlanting in the Communal Garden\nThe East Green House is currently home to too many seedlings that are crying out to be planted! Ok\, they’re not actually “crying” but even a non-gardener like Shawn can tell that they have had enough of being cooped up. \nSurprising but true – most of them would rather be outside in the ground than inside in the heat. Who knew? \nBed preparation in the Communal Garden\n \nLots of beds (a dozen at a guess) still need turning and weeding before they can be planted: it’s easier than it sounds! (At least\, that’s what I’m told.) \nDown with Dandelions\n \nDandelions are so 1990’s. \nErgo: a campaign to suppress them in the Plot Rental Garden is being launched. (Bounties will be paid!*) \nWe have a variety of suppression technologies (weed whacker\, tiger torch\, hoe) but the only surefire way to get rid of them is to dig out the root … and by that I mean 90% of the root! \nYes\, there are loads of them … and yes\, there are “loads x loads” next door … that doesn’t mean we can’t knock them back! \nKnocking them out will definitely take tons of effort but it’s got to start somewhere. \n*But not very big bounties… check with Shawn before making retirement plans based upon this income.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Work Party
DESCRIPTION:The best reason for getting through Monday … \n\nHey All\, \nTruth to tell I got caught on the bounce –  the Monday Update went out before the updates to the Calendar had been posted … again. \nSome things like these will be happening … details to follow ASAP [sorry about that]: \nCompost: mulching brown leaves\, harvesting greens\nI think we have a large pile of green grass already cut and there is kitchen scraps in the bin that could be used to make up a bin of compost on Tuesday evening. \nWe could use help with chopping up the dead leaves with the mower and cutting more grass in the ICA green space next door\, if it is high enough. \nOne nice thing about the Composting Crew’s process is that people can come for  short time during the week or at  any time other than the regularly scheduled “Work Party” days. \nThere are straightforward tasks like mowing grass or chopping up dead leaves with the mower or turning the compost from one bin to another than can be done in small time chunks by an individual as time allows. \nOnce you’ve seen it done and done it yourself you can do it whenever you have the time and inclination. \nPlanting in the Communal Garden\nWatering in the Communal Garden\nRheum rhababarum Harvesting with Elizabeth\n \nYou can eat it right out of the ground … apparently! \nSee Event page here \n\nEdited at 0608:2222

SUMMARY:Rhubarb Rhumba
DESCRIPTION:Rheum rhababarum\n \nRheum rhubabarum: who knew that Rhubarb had such a mellifluous scientific name? [… rhetorical question] \nHarvesting\nAs it happens much Rhubarb is ready to be harvested from the planters in the Plot Rental Garden … rather than opening up a harvesting free for all … the Garden will arrange for bundles of Rheum rhababarum to be made available on a first come first served basis. \nHarvesting will begin at or around 6 PM … if you like to help out or learn how to harvest Rhubarb be at the Garden by  6 PM. \nBundles\nBundles will be collected at and distributed from the Picnic Table area … if you’re not sure where that is – just look for picnic tables with rapidly disappearing bundles of Rhubarb on them\, or not\, as the case is sure to be. \nI have it on good authority that the next Rhubarb harvest will not likely take place for 5 to 6 weeks … in advance of which we will post another Rhumba notice.

SUMMARY:Saturday Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Saturday again? … YES! \n\nWhat if it’s raining? \nThe Practical Guide on Attending Work Parties may help\, the guide clearly states: “Come when you can\, stay as long as you want.” \nReceived wisdom from the garden’s deep dark past also states: “If it is raining at the start of the work party\, the work party is cancelled.” \nYou can decide whether it is “raining” or just a “shower”. \n\nFortunately somethings can be done even if things are wet… \n… and you’re wearing the proper clothing! For instance… \n\nWeeding\nWeeds in plots are that much easier to take out when the soil is very moist.\nHave a look at this image… \nCan you tell the weeds from the sprouting vegetable? \nIf you can: Great! Come on down and get to work. =:) \nIf you can’t: Great! Come on down and get to work anyway … the clever gardeners who planted these beds put in little wooden stakes to mark the seedling rows! So all one has to do is remove anything NOT in line with the little wooden stakes! \nSome knee pads are available from the Communal Garden Shed. \n\nComposting … can be an “all weather” activity \nExcept for the mowing the lawn part of course… but turning bins\, for example\, is guaranteed to kept you warm(er) if nothing else. \n\nWhat if it’s cloudy but only damp-ish? \nIn that case there are a few rather … ahem\, arduous tasks … which might be easier to do if you’re intent on keeping warm. \nFor instance… \n\nSifting Soil and Turning Beds in the Communal Garden \nKurt’s gone to the trouble of building some very useful soil sifters which make sifting soil and removing weeds almost as easy as staying in bed … Don’t believe me? Give one a try and tell me that you’re not dreaming! \n\nTurning over and removing weeds from the Squash Patch \nWhatever Quack Grass is left in the Squash Patch in the Communal Garden can be assaulted with a clear conscience. True\, we are planning on covering the area with Ground Cloth but there’s nothing like extraction to make certain it’s curtains for the QC! \n\nSetting In Ground Frames in the Communal Garden \nPrecision work for the meticulous gardener! Kurt is focused on setting In Ground Frames around unplanted beds in the CG … You might get to use a LASER! \n\n0613:0014

SUMMARY:Saturday Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Nobody even came close to figuring out what the two images at the bottom of this post had in common so I’m not going to tell you that for the time being. \nInstead I’m going to tell you about some ideas about what “might” be happening in the Garden on Saturday! \nDon’t stop me if you’ve seen any of these before! \n\nIt’s “Bed Time…” \n… but not for you! \nNope\, its “bed time” for the 10 beds in the southernmost row of the Communal Garden. \nHowever\, just before they can be “tucked in”  (i.e. planted) … they need to be cleared\, turned\, sifted and raked. \nYes\, I know it sounds like a lot of work … because it is a lot of work … that’s why we need help in general and your help in particular. \nFortunately\, there will be some very experienced hands on site to demonstrate how to turn hard work into … well\, less hard work. \n\nIF we have Ground Cloth today we will cover more (hopefully\, the rest) of the Squash Patch with it and spread mulch over it. \nWhich should be somewhat “lighter” work than the job above. \n \n\nAlso … \n \n… you could help weed some of the planted beds in the Communal Garden. \nI also hear that there may be a disturbing amount of Chickweed infesting the western half of the Pea Trellises… \n\nFinally…\nWe are trying to prepare 3 beds just to the south of the Greenhouses. Bill has already churned up what will be the outdoor Tomato Trellis Bed but no doubt much remains to be done here. \n\nTCHA! \nNobody even got within shouting distance of these two images’ common denominator! \nSo I’m saving the rather banal answer for future reference. \nReally! How any of you expect to figure out the clues for the Garden’s Treasure Hunt is beyond me. \n\n0618:2148

SUMMARY:Ladybug Liberty
DESCRIPTION:“Ladybug Ladybug fly away home” \n\nWill there be 10\,000 Ladybugs set free? …NO!\nWill there be 20\,000 Ladybugs set free? …NO!\nWill there be 21\,000 Ladybugs set free? …YES!\nI don’t know much about Ladybugs except that we’ll be turning all the ones we’re buying loose over the course of the day. If you would like to turn some loose yourself or let your children turn some loose in / on or around your plot … be at the Garden sometime between 10AM and 2PM and we’ll see what we can manage. \n\nTraditional Nursery Rhyme\n“Ladybug\, ladybug” is chanted by children when a ladybug insect lands on their person. If the ladybug doesn’t fly away of its own accord the child would gently blow it away chanting “Ladybug Ladybug fly away home”. This insect is found every summer in the gardens of Britain – the most common colour is red with black spots\, less common are the yellow variety. In Britain ladybugs are referred to as ‘ladybirds’. \nLadybird History Connection – Gunpowder Plot Conspirators?\nFarmers knew of the Ladybird’s value in reducing the level of pests in their crops and it was traditional for them to cry out the rhyme before they burnt their fields following harvests (this reduced the level of insects and pests) in deference to the helpful ladybird: \n“Ladybird\, ladybird fly away home\,\nYour house in on fire and your children are gone” \nThe English word ladybird is a derivative of the Catholic term ” Our Lady”. The tradition of calling this rhyme was believed to have been used as a seemingly innocent warning cry to Catholic (recusants) who refused to attend Protestant services as required by the Act of Uniformity (1559 & 1662). This law forbade priests to say Mass and forbade communicants to attend it. Consequently Mass was held secretly in the open fields. Laymen were subject to jail and heavy fines and priests to execution. Many priests were executed by the terrible death of being burnt alive at the stake or\, even worse\, being hung\, drawn and quartered. The most famous English recusants were Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder Plot Conspirators. \nhttp://www.rhymes.org.uk/ladybug_ladybug.htm \n\n
