DESCRIPTION:The best reason for getting through Monday …\n… and having gotten through Monday here’s some of what we’re hoping to do tonight. \n\nBed preparation in the communal garden: turning soil\, weeding and edging the beds\nMove sifted soil from its storage area in the south of the communal garden to some beds in the communal garden and some plot boxes in the Plot Rental Garden. The wheelbarrow work will require some arm strength… oh yeah\, so will the shovel work. =:)\nThere may be some planting to be done in the communal garden … we’ll know better by the time you get there.\nThe Greenhouses are going to have in-ground boxes put in\, to increase the depth of “good soil” for the (mainly) tomatoes. Once the boards are placed\, we’ll be filling them with (already) sifted soil from the soil storage area.\nAll the Above Ground Plot Box (AGPB) numbers removed for the replacement program need to be re-attached. Also any AGPBs which have had their numbers removed in order to be “banded” will need to have theirs re-attached as well … although there’s a trick to doing these ones! If you can figure out what it is you’re probably more than skilled enough to do the work! =:)

The best part of this project … LASERS! Don’t believe me? Come over and have a look … but don’t look into the LASERS! \nGardening\n“Real” gardening in the form of bed preparation … soil turning\, weeding and edging beds in the communal garden \nMore “real” gardening … planting in the communal garden. \nReclamation\nDepending upon whether or not the Soil Storage Area has been cleared by the inimitable efforts of the CDC Crew we may… M A Y begin to reclaim the last 3 beds on the West Side of the communal garden. If you were looking for some seriously strenuous work … this could be your lucky day! \nFYI: ‘experts’ in the field of West Side bed reclamation tell me that it will take 5 to 7 hours to reclaim each one of these 3 beds … Yowza! \nIn Closing…\nIt is Wednesday\, May 21\,  as I write this so please check this posting later for changes and more up to the minute infodata.

DESCRIPTION:The best reason for getting through Monday… © \nComposting\nThe Composting Crew’s Home Opener starts tonight “just after” 6 PM. \nIf you ever wondered what was going to happen to that mountain of bagged trees leaves stacked up against the east fence in the Communal Garden all will be revealed this evening! \nI’m told that a Compost Crew consists of  3 members… and that generally there are at least a couple of crews…so there is a sort of leisurely rhythm to the practice which may belie the fact that there is some strenuous physical activity involved… however the more volunteers\, the more crews and the more volunteers\, the less strain! [I think that’s how the math works.] \n\nI asked Kelly about Compost Crew scheduling and here’s what he emailed back to me … \n———- Forwarded message ———-\nFrom: Kelly Eberle\nDate: Mon\, May 26\, 2014 at 12:58 PM\nSubject: Compost Crewsday \nShawn\, \nI think we tried to meet weekly in the past few seasons. A lot of green material accumulates towards the end of the growing season so we ramped up to twice a week for a while\, something like Wednesday and Saturday. \nIt is best to have 2 to 4 people for each compost session. Any more than 4 and you are usually tripping over each other. \nEarly season composting mostly involves mowing the grass in the green space next door to make compost. The bagging mower that was donated last year helped a lot with this. \nKurt had organized the Dream Center folks to help with mulching up the brown material and storing in the bin by the east fence of the Communal Garden. This helped a lot in cutting down the time the composting group had to spend each session. Usually we can clean things up pretty well in 1.5 hours to carry over for a week. \nMaybe I’ll capture some of these notes and other “tips and tricks” we have learned over the past few years. \nKelly \n\nPlanting in the Communal Garden\nLoads of beds were prepped on the weekend so it will be full steam ahead for the planting program in the Communal Garden. \nThe prepped beds are in fine shape and planting them is about as close to “real gardening” as it gets! \nPrepping Beds in the Communal Garden\nI know that after the previous paragraph you’d think it’s clear sailing in the CG but in fact there are 17 or 18 beds yet to be turned over and weeded… this too is ‘about as close to “real gardening” is it gets’ but with a little more strenuous activity thrown into the mix. \nSome of the beds yet to be prepped have suffered the depredations of moderate to severe Quack Grass infestation and may present a challenge to the dedicated weeders amongst us. \n\n Unload bags of soil amendments and store\nGarden Retreat will be delivering the second load of Promix and Sea Soil to the Garden and help moving the half-ton truck load would be much appreciated. \n. \n. \n. \nMonday\, May 26\, 1440
